Why Echtra Echtra features this

Galloway is famous for being the UK's very first Dark Sky Park. Because there is virtually no artificial light, taking a tour with a local expert who knows exactly where to look is an absolute must.

Galloway Forest Park in South West Scotland holds Gold Tier status as an International Dark Sky Park, meaning its night skies are among the darkest and most pristine in Europe. The ‘Dark Sky Ranger’ (Matthew McFadzean) runs immersive outdoor stargazing tours here from August through May. Beginning with practical experiments to help visitors grasp the sheer scale of the universe, the tour moves on to using high-powered astro-binoculars to search for shooting stars, the Milky Way, and distant galaxies, all accompanied by fascinating stories of ancient constellations.

Scotland's First Dark Sky Park

Experience true darkness in Galloway Forest Park, where over 7,000 stars are visible to the naked eye without light pollution.

Deep Space Viewing

Use specialist astro-binoculars to clearly view the moons of Jupiter, the Andromeda Galaxy, and the Orion Nebula.

  • 2+ hour guided stargazing experience
  • Use of high-powered tripod-mounted astro-binoculars
  • Practical experiments on space distance and scale
  • Transport to the forest park
  • Warm winter clothing (essential)
