The Editorial
Echtra Echtra was founded on a straightforward premise: write honestly about travel, without the incentives that distort most travel media. There is no advertising on this site. There are no press trips in exchange for coverage. No sponsored content. No affiliate arrangements that colour our recommendations.
What we publish is the result of genuine experience — places visited, meals eaten, journeys taken and honestly assessed. The writing aims to be useful, unhurried and occasionally surprising. We are interested in the texture of places, not just the logistics of getting to them.
Our coverage focuses on Ireland, Scotland and wider Europe, with a particular interest in Atlantic coastlines, slow travel, wildlife encounters and places that require some effort to reach. We believe the best travel stories are the ones that make you want to go somewhere you hadn't previously considered.
The name Echtra Echtra comes from the Old Irish word echtra — an adventure or journey overseas, cognate with the Latin extra (“outside”, “beyond”).

What We Believe
No copy approval, no press-trip obligations, no undisclosed relationships. We write what we actually think, which is the only reason the writing is worth reading.
We are more interested in depth than breadth. Staying longer, travelling less frequently, and actually understanding a place rather than checking it off.
We write about places that exist on their own terms, not places that exist to be photographed. The Instagrammable angle is never the point.
