Semaphore d’Etel: Watching the Waves and Walking the Beach in Morbihan, France

Semaphore d'Etel

Picture the scene, it’s a warm and breezy, but not windy, afternoon. There’s a blue sky, blue ocean and a haze. The sun is warm and you have miles of sandy beach to yourself.

After a long lunch of typical Crêpes bretonne or moules and a bollée of cider or a dry white from the Loire valley. Head to the point where the River Etel meets the Atlantic and watch the sunset over the endless ocean.

Summer France have one of the most unique properties along this stretch of coast, the Sémaphore d’Etel, a special building built in the early 1960s to communicate, via semaphore, to coastal shipping the conditions of the sand bar that forms across the river mouth. Sometimes passable but often not and always shifting, the Sémaphore provided an important function for maritime safety and is a part of the region’s proud maritime heritage.

Divided into two apartments, with the larger sleeping four and the smaller sleeping two it is also possible to rent both for larger get togethers.

Few places in Europe allow for such relaxed enjoyment of life than the beaches of the Atlantic Coast of France, and few places offer more than Morbihan in Brittany.

Guests can enjoy the use of on-site bicycles, and from April to September, a shuttle service offers convenient crossings of the Etel River. This service connects the Semaphore side with the opposite bank at the Port of Etel, and carries bicycles. Additionally, WiFi, TV, and cleaning services are included for a comfortable stay.

This unique lodging is located in southern Brittany, within the renowned Grand Site of France, known as the Wild Dunes of Gâvres to Quiberon, part of Brittany’s largest dune complex, stretching for 35 kilometers of uninterrupted natural coastline.
